Once again, Michael Yon is back in Iraq as an embedded reporter, this time as an affiliate of The weekly standard. He wrote an interesting piece on what it takes to become an embedded reporter that is definetely worth the read.

Well, you just knew it was too good to be true. Went to bed with the refrig doing its job, the thermometer reading around 65. Woke up this morning (got my self a gun.. no wait, thats Sopranos..) and checked the thermometer - 70.8.. ya, thats not going to work for me, time to call 1-800-4MAYTAG again.

The lonely Maytag repairman

My tale of woe starts out last week Sunday. We returned home from a weekend couples camping trip to Gov. Dodge state park - I still need to do that write up.. Anyway, when we got home we noticed the refrig didn't seem to be working quite right, but didn't give it much more thought. By Monday it was obvious that the 14 month old Amana refig we had purchased no longer seemed to be doing the job we wanted - namely to keep our food cool / frozen.

Out of control taxes

I've known for decades that Wisconsin taxes the shit out of us - I guess it started back when I was in the military and although I was stationed in California they still took state taxes out. Now, I guess that wouldn't be too surprising except that none of the guys in my unit had state taxes being withheld - they all got exemptions while on active duty. Over at the Wisconsin Conservative Digest they put together a rather disheartening blog that asks Can you afford to live in Wisconsin?

Speaking of freaking cool military gadgets, in what might be the wildest story I've read in quite some time, the Guardian reports - Armed and dangerous - Flipper the firing dolphin let loose by Katrina.

Bill Gates & Napoleon Dynamite

My co-worker Dan was out at the Microsoft PDC this past week. Among the multitude of text messages I got from him with things like "This rocks!", "Damn, did you see that?" (I watched some on webcast), he sent me one talking about a video they had with Bill Gates and Napoleon Dynamite. After some digging, I found it online here.

While paying bills Monday, I noticed that Capitol One had raised the limit on our "No Hassle card", taking it to an amount beyond what we need. Since execess available debt affects your credit score, I called them up to lower the limit and put a lock on it so they won't auto increase it without request.

Lessons learned

Instapundid provides a list of Katrina lessons learned. What a novel concept, store some emergency supplies of your own just in case. If you do any camping you're half way there. Keep some extra cans of soup on hand, a few gallons of water, flash lights, a radio, extra batteries for both, and an emergency medical kit.
